The First Descendant - Understanding World Difficulty

World difficulty in The First Descendant game plays an integral role in the game's overall experience. Players can switch the world difficulty between 'Normal' and 'Hard'. Unsurprisingly, the Hard mode delivers a more challenging gameplay experience, but in return, provides more rewards. This guide will provide all the necessary information about World difficulty in The First Descendant, especially how to change it.

Changing World Difficulty

In The First Descendant, players can modify the World difficulty only after clearing a Field on the Normal mode. The current difficulty level can be seen at the top left corner, under the area name. Changing the World difficulty involves the following steps:

  • Click the 'World Difficulty' option.
  • Choose the desired difficulty level.
  • Click 'Apply' at the bottom of the menu to save the changes.

The World difficulty can be changed by choosing it in the map menu.

Normal Mode or Hard Mode?

Being a beginner, the appropriate mode would be Normal. It offers players the chance to grasp the gameplay basics, complete the story and field missions, and unlock new Descendants. Also, failed missions can be retried, but remember, the amount of retries is limited.

On the contrary, Hard mode, best suited for endgame content, provides greater rewards, including rare resources for unlocking Descendants. The expected rewards for each mission can be checked before starting it.

Unlocking Hard Mode

Hard mode in The First Descendant can be unlocked after finishing a Field in Normal mode. In essence, progressing the main mission unlocks the first Field, Kingston. Completing a small number of missions brings access to the whole area, which allows unlocking Hard mode quickly.

The game features a total of eight Fields which are unlocked sequentially by progressing the main quest. To move between Fields, use the fast travel points on the map.

Getting the Basics Right

Before jumping into the chaos of the Hard mode, make sure to familiarize yourself with unlocking every Descendant and their abilities. Once you feel confident, learn about Void Intercept Battles to give yourself an edge in the game.
