Rework Begins on Ubisoft's Project U After Half a Decade in Development

According to reliable sources in the gaming world, Ubisoft’s much-anticipated Project U has undergone a major reset this year, a development that comes after five prolific years earmarked by intensive work.

A Stuttering Start, an Ambitious Plan, and a Pause

Unveiled in September 2022, Project U was slated as an innovative session-based cooperative shooter, promising a unique gaming experience. However, more than two years after the public announcement, details about the game are sporadic at best. The hush around Project U isn’t without reason. Codenamed Pathfinder, the project was set on the back burner in Spring 2024, grappling with challenges related to replayability, an integral gaming element.

Project U employs a thrilling concept where the Earth has been taken over by mechanizing machines, with the game featuring ten four-member teams fighting increasingly challenging enemies through various map zones. These zones could potentially host thousands of artificial intelligence-controlled enemy robots, leading toward an epic finale in the map's central zone, which holds the ultimate boss.

Replayability: A Persistent Challenge

Project U, on its debut, received positive cheers. However, under the hood, it was besieged with a major issue - replayability. Insiders pointed towards it becoming a recurring problem for the developers, inflating the project's budget with a string of necessary revisions. These revisions aimed at reducing monotony, involved the integration of diverse biomes into the map and introducing new bosses, but playtests in February 2024 indicated that replayability remained a concern.

In a significant development in March 2024, Ubisoft Annecy declared an immediate halt to Project U's development, transferring outsourcing studios to other projects. Project U witnessed an exodus of many developers, including two Director-level exits – Mathieu Granjon and Damien Kieken, who shifted their focus to Assassin's Creed and DICE, respectively.

Project U: A Potential Success or An Uncertain Future?

Contrary to cancellation rumors, Ubisoft remains hopeful about the project. They ascertain that Player vs Environment (PvE) games have a promising market, evidenced by Helldivers 2, which registered an impressive million units' sales in its initial launch weeks. Therefore, Ubisoft has reinitiated Project U with fresh eyes and a slim team helmed by a new producer to explore innovative directions. Yet, the combined experience of past and present developers ticks towards skepticism, hinting that the success of this ambitious project hangs in the balance.

Is Project U destined to sail through a decade-long journey at Ubisoft? Let's wait and watch.
