Helldivers 2 x Killzone Crossover: Limited-Time Content Sparks Frenzy

TL;DR: Arrowhead has launched a limited-time Helldivers 2 x Killzone crossover, offering Killzone-themed cosmetics for five days, sparking excitement and backlash over high prices and pay-to-win concerns. The crossover coincides with the Helldivers 2's Omens of Tyranny update and introduces a new premium content tier. Some fans speculate about a new Killzone game, although a new title would likely need a different developer due to Guerrilla Games' current projects. Arrowhead is experimenting with longer in-game store rotations and aims to incorporate player feedback to refine the store's system, addressing dissatisfaction over brief item availability.

Arrowhead Releases Helldivers 2 x Killzone Crossover

Developer Arrowhead has confirmed and launched the previously leaked Helldivers 2 x Killzone crossover. However, these cosmetics are only available for five consecutive days. Thus, fans are given a limited window to purchase these items.

Following the recent Omens of Tyranny update, which introduced the Illuminate faction, Helldivers 2 now has its first official crossover. The first part of the Helldivers 2 x Killzone crossover, which includes a Killzone-themed armor set, an assault rifle, a banner, a cape, and a player title, is currently available. Arrowhead has announced that the second part will be available in the Helldivers 2 store on December 23.

Helldivers 2 x Killzone 2: High Demand Premium Content

According to an Arrowhead blog post, the Helldivers 2 x Killzone 2 falls into a new tier of high-demand premium content that is "reserved for collaborations and other uniquely themed work." Therefore, players should expect to spend a significant amount of Super Credits to obtain the full set of items. The developer plans to offer something unique and exceptional to players in this premium tier.

In an exciting twist, Arrowhead also hinted at an additional Killzone 2 reward for all players depending on their performance in the Galactic War.

Redesigning the Helldivers 2 In-game Store

Arrowhead plans to revise the functionality of the Helldivers 2 in-game store due to player feedback. Presently, it seems many players feel the rotation period for items in the store is too brief, resulting in missed opportunities to purchase sought-after items. With the amount of content being added to the store, the rotation period naturally extends, but Arrowhead aims to test longer rotations with Killzone items, offering a five-day term for each page of items.

After this temporary measure, the rotation will return to its normal pace, and Arrowhead will gather player feedback on the experiment before considering any permanent changes to the store's rotation system.

Fans Reactions and the Prospect of a New Killzone Game

Arrowhead has been cautious with crossovers, with Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead CCO and Helldivers 2 Creative Director, mentioning concerns about preserving the IP's integrity, and Arrowhead re-emphasized in its latest blog post that the Killzone crossover makes perfect sense for the game.

This successful crossover has sparked speculation about Sony's possible return to the Killzone franchise with a brand-new game, although any new game may require development from an alternate entity, given original developer Guerrilla Games' current commitment to the Horizon Online project and Horizon 3.

    Community Backlash Over High-Priced Items

The Helldivers 2 x Killzone crossover has already led to player complaints regarding the high cost of its items. The pricing of the new armor set, the new cape, the new helmet, and especially the new assault rifle have sparked controversy, along with the time-limited availability of these items in the store.

The cost of the items and their temporary availability in the store have raised accusations of pay-to-win practices from the gaming community, despite the items being considered inferior to existing alternatives. The Helldivers subreddit is rife with complaints and calls for a different approach to monetization. There are also increasing negative comments on the Steam user reviews section due to the high prices for the crossover items.
