MechWarrior 5 Clans Rolls Out Anticipated DLC Titled Trials of War
MechWarrior 5 Clans flips the switch on its newest chapter, amplifying the appeal of the robotics-themed game. The much-awaited Trials of War DLC is now available, although some fans have reservations about the chosen distribution model.
Dual Attraction - PvP Mode and Horde Mode
MechWarrior 5 Clans is carving a niche in the mech game universe, a genre that received renewed attention after last year's breakthrough release, Armored Core 6. Despite its understated presence, MechWarrior 5 Clans keeps fans interested with its compelling combat sequences and engaging narrative.
The Trials of War DLC magnifies the game's appeal with a batch of fresh updates, the most anticipated of which are the new five-player PvP mode boasting ten arenas, and a relentless co-op horde mode. Although eagerly received, some fans are unsettled by the game mode's paywall placement.
Fan Reactions - A Mixed Bag
The announcement sparked off a wave of mixed reactions among the fan community. Although the inclusion of the PvP and horde modes is largely met with enthusiasm, the DLC cost factor has also sparked controversy. Both the DLC's Steam page and the MechWarrior subreddit recorded numerous complaints regarding the paywall-protected features and allegations of repackaging pre-existing content.
Official Response - Addressing Concerns
Russ Bullock, the CEO of the game's developer, Piranha Games, went on record to address the concerns in the wake of the reactions. He presents a strong case for the DLC, citing Piranha Games' reputable track record of balancing premium and free content in a fair market context.
Dispelling allegations of stripping content from the base game, Bullock insists that the new PvP and horde modes were conceived and developed entirely post the release of MechWarrior 5 Clans. He also clarified that DLC sharing is enabled for these two modes, allowing fans to team up with those who own the DLC to gain access. He also promises further updates to the DLC that include new maps among other features.
Balancing Premium and Free Content
While it is understandable to have reservations about locking seemingly fundamental game modes behind a DLC, it is also worthy to note that the sharing feature lessens the impact and the promise of future updates adds value in the long run.
MechWarrior 5 Clans' Trials of War DLC is now available at 20% off until December 5. First-timers can also grab the base game at a similar discount until December 4. Currently, Microsoft's gaming subscription service also includes the game.
New Updates Beyond the Trials of War
Those on the hunt for new content without the attached price tag won't be disappointed. MechWarrior 5 Clans also launches a free high-difficulty mode called Trueborn, eight new omnipods, and a slew of bug fixes and UI improvements simultaneously with the DLC. This ensures that all fans, DLC owners or not, still receive something new to explore.
