TL;DR: Japan’s Pocketpair has partnered with Sony to create Palworld Entertainment, focusing on merchandise and music inspired by the successful game Palworld, not involving a publishing deal. Launched on PC and Xbox, the game surpassed 25 million players and sold 15 million copies on Steam, despite controversy over similarities to Pokémon. CEO Takuro Mizobe will lead the new venture, with potential plans for a PlayStation release amidst unresolved legal issues with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.
Collaborative Venture with Palworld's Creators
Japan-based video game developer, Pocketpair, has teamed up with tech giant Sony in a significant move. The collaboration establishes a new venture known as Palworld Entertainment, created with a view to maximize the potential benefits derived from the internationally popular video game, Palworld. The strategic partnership will further involve Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Aniplex. It is significant to clarify this agreement does not represent a publishing deal for the video game nor the acquisition of Palworld by Sony. Instead, it serves as a driving force to capitalize on non-gaming related products such as merchandise and music, inspired by the game's global success.
The Emergence of Palworld Entertainment
The fresh partnership designated Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe as the leader of the new entity, primarily dealing with the global licensing and merchandising activities associated with Palworld. Launched earlier this year on PC and Xbox, Palworld, also known as 'Pokémon with guns', is a survival and crafting game that witnessed monumental success. The game somewhat breaks records, coming to exceed a staggering player count of 25 million within just one month of its launch. Such a soaring popularity earned it the title of the biggest third-party Game Pass launch ever. An estimated 15 million copies sold on Steam alone.
Success Amid Controversy
Despite Palworld's impressive success, controversy ensues. Allegations were raised of it being a rip-off of the beloved franchise, Pokémon. Pocketpair continuously refutes these allegations despite the intense criticism, including death threats leveled against its staff. Attributing success to the controversy, the release of Palworld prompted fast action from Nintendo to remove a striking Pokémon mod, followed by a statement declaration from The Pokemon Company. Legal repercussions are yet to surface, and Pocketpair maintains that no communication has been received from Nintendo or The Pokemon Company regarding such matter. Future plans also indicate a potential release of Palworld on PlayStation following the recent announcement.
