EA Considers Subscription Service to Revive Apex Legends

TL;DR: EA is considering a monthly subscription model for Apex Legends, similar to Fortnite Crew, offering in-game currency, rewards, and Battle Pass tiers. A recent survey hints at this potential shift as EA seeks to boost monetization efforts following unmet financial targets and a declining player base. The company is also revisiting nostalgic elements, like the original game map, to recapture interest. While these strategies aim to enhance player retention and revenue, their success remains uncertain.

EA Explores Monthly Subscription Possibility for Apex Legends

Electronic Arts (EA) appears to be contemplating the addition of a monthly subscription service for Apex Legends, as suggested by a recent survey conducted by the video game publisher.

A Potential New Subscription Model Mirroring Fortnite Crew

According to the survey that was dispatched to a subset of Apex Legends gamers and later to Insider Gaming, respondents were asked about their interest in a monthly subscription option that would offer monthly in-game currency, rewards, and Battle Pass tiers. This proposed service bears striking similarities to Fortnite Crew's $9.99-a-month subscription model, known for its exclusive skins, V-bucks, and Battle Pass tiers rewards system.

Heightened Monetization for Apex Legends Amidst Performance Decline

Although EA has not yet made any official declarations concerning an Apex Legends monthly subscription service, their past pattern suggests they may very well be contemplating such a move. Previous EA surveys have often hinted, although indirectly, at subsequent content releases or strategic shifts within the company. EA's exploration of additional revenue streams for Apex Legends comes as little surprise. The company acknowledged earlier this year a shortfall in accomplishing its monetization targets. Appealing to the investors in their recent earnings call, EA CEO, Andrew Wilson outlined the company's commitment to 'innovating the core experience' of Apex Legends monetization policies, while offering little to get gamers back into the game.

The Nostalgic Strategy: Reinstating Apex Legends' Initial Design

One example of such an innovation was the decision to reintroduce Apex Legends' original game map and experience, a strategic move designed to lure players through the power of nostalgia. However, the viability of this strategy and its capacity to retain the game's player base remains uncertain. For the time being, it appears that the aim might be to maximize revenues from the existing loyal players, as the total player number continues to drop potentially.
