Marvel Rivals Rolling Out Seasonal Additions: Unique Characters and Fresh Gameplay
Marvel Rivals’ creative director, Guangyun Chen, recently unveiled via an interview with DotEsports exciting new seasonal plans for the top-rated six-vs-six shooter. He gave gamers a peek into the introduction of new characters, maps, content, and more to enrich action-packed gameplay.
Since its November launch, Marvel Rivals operated in Season Zero, a condensed mini-season. The much-anticipated Season One is set to commence in January. While the exact start date remains under wraps, Chen disclosed key details about the structure of each season in a chat with Dot Esports. Each three-month season will constitute two halves during which new characters will make their grand entries. This setup enables the addition of new characters at both the season's beginning and during its mid-season.
Connecting Stories, Themed Heroes, and Maps
Upcoming seasons will boast “seasonal stories and narrative that introduce corresponding-themed heroes and maps”, providing a seamless integration of new content into the game's flow. Despite the convergence of timelines in Marvel Rivals, expect more variety in characters to keep the suspense high.
The creative narratives in Marvel Rivals unravel as gamers complete seasonal missions. Thanks to the collaboration with renowned Marvel screenwriters and artists at NetEase, players can enjoy riveting and suspense-filled stories. Notably, Chen revealed how Team-ups will metamorphose each season as new heroes make their entrance. This exciting twist means new Team-ups will roll out, triggering "even more gameplay possibilities.”
Controversial Seasonal Boosts and Character Roles
Chen took time to address the controversial seasonal boosts feature, which has sparked debates among the player community. The seasonal boost activates for "core" characters in Team-ups to "encourage players to use Team-ups to receive the seasonal stat boosts."
Rejected demands from some players included the adjustment of Wolverine's role to a Vanguard. Chen emphasized that the game developers have no intentions of altering existing heroes. Instead, the developers will concentrate on balancing the characters based on their current roles and gameplay.
In response to fans’ demands for more Vanguards and Strategists, the team plans to balance character roles in future season updates. Marvel's abundant characters offer a trove of potentially exciting additions to the game.
Explore Enhanced Skin Designs and Cross-platform Progression
The game's developers acknowledged the possibility of introducing "enhanced" skins for characters with marked similarities. Although the specifics of such development remain to be hashed out, the team is committed to exploring all possibilities.
Despite significant success since its release, players await the promise of cross-progression in Marvel Rivals. Players anticipate seamless gameplay across multiple platforms with the same unlocks, ranks, and skins on their PC and consoles. The development team acknowledges this contact and is actively working to implement cross-progression, despite the daunting task of navigating platform-specific rules.
Update on Role Queue
Marvel Rivals has sparked anticipation about the addition of role queues to the game. With different Marvel heroes and villains occupying diverse roles, many players voiced the need for a role queue system to manage team compositions better. Chen, however, broke the bad news to hopeful players: the game developers are not currently considering a role queue.
He stressed the developers' aspiration to enhance team diversity via team-up skills and their own designs, allowing players to embody their favorite Marvel superheroes rather than be constrained by a specific role. Despite the deviations from traditional hero shooter roles, Chen assured players that the current character roles offer flexibility and multiple capabilities.
