Ubisoft's XDefiant Future Uncertain Beyond Season Four
Speculation is rife in the gaming industry that Ubisoft could consider discontinuing support for XDefiant after its fourth season, with a notable leaker being the source of the news. Ubisoft is reportedly undertaking internal game testing to collect fresh feedback which might shape the future of XDefiant. The first-person shooter's executive producer, Mark Rubin, has countered the swirling rumors of diminishing player counts, asserting the game remains popular.
End of Support Under Consideration
The gaming fraternity is abuzz with whispers that Ubisoft could wind down support for XDefiant post the release of its fourth season. The company is thought to be conducting comprehensive internally hosted test sessions to gauge player opinions and garner fresh feedback on their shooter game. Currently, XDefiant is in the midst of its thriving second season, which was released on September 25. This new season brought players a host of new features, including more unique factions, advanced weaponry, innovative maps, and exhilarating game modes.
A Bona Fide COD Rival or Just Rumors?
Prior to hitting the market, XDefiant attracted much attention and gained a reputation as a potential competitor to the Call of Duty series, often referred to as a "COD killer". Rubin, an industry veteran who has been involved with some of the most iconic Call of Duty titles, conveyed his uncertainty about XDefiant being a COD slayer. Instead, he described it as a tribute to the classic arcade arena shooter, designed to capture the hearts of fans for years to come. Recent rumors, however, suggest a sharp decline in XDefiant's player base, leading to speculation about its sustainability. Despite debunking such speculations, Twitter has seen recent activity from Shawn Weber, a known leaker and industry insider. Weber's posts highlighted that Ubisoft's research team is sourcing new feedback on XDefiant from internal testing sessions. He further suggested that unless player numbers increase, XDefiant support might well be dropped after the fourth season, based on confirmation from multiple reliable sources.
XDefiant's Future Hangs in the Balance
While Ubisoft and leakers duel over the future of XDefiant beyond the currently planned fourth season, nothing is certain. On the positive side, Ubisoft has released its full one-year plan for XDefiant, promising the continuation of new content, encompassing more unique factions, new weaponry, novel maps, battle passes, and limited-time modes. Recently, the game debuted its second major content update, adding a new faction known as the Highwaymen, complete with a brutal collection of makeshift weapons, drawn from the Far Cry New Dawn theme. Simultaneously, Ubisoft has pledged a resolution to XDefiant's ongoing hit registration and netcode issues, which have been a cause for player frustration. Alongside the Season 2 launch, Ubisoft acknowledged progress in addressing these issues but also admitted to hiring a team of specialist engineers to further enhance the gameplay experience. The reasoning behind the alleged falling player count of XDefiant remains enigmatic, but rectifications to the game's notorious hit registration issues might be instrumental in enticing players to return.
