Understanding Weapon Proficiency in The First Descendant
Weapon Proficiency, often abbreviated as WP, is a leveling system for every weapon in the game, First Descendant. It is a mechanic that tracks how much XP you've accumulated with a certain weapon. With every weapon in First Descendant having a Weapon Proficiency rating, you can increase this rating by earning XP. Initially, all weapons start at Weapon Proficiency Level 0 and can be maxed out at Level 40.
Distinguishing Weapon Proficiency from Weapon Level
It's crucial to understand that Weapon Proficiency is not the same as weapon level. While a weapon level affects the base damage and caps at Level 100, the Weapon Proficiency is tied to your account, not to the weapon itself. This implies if you reach Weapon Proficiency Level 40 with your Thunder Cage, any future Thunder Cage SMGs you acquire will also be at WP40 by default; there's no need to relevel your Weapon Proficiency unless you use a Crystallization Catalyst.
Checking Your Weapon Proficiency
You can easily check your Weapon Proficiency values in the Weapons List tab of your inventory. Each weapon will display its name along with the current Weapon Proficiency level. Be reassured that this number is tied to your account, not the weapon, so you don't lose Weapon Proficiency by dismantling any weapons you own.
Increasing your Weapon Proficiency
Weapon Proficiency can be increased by earning XP while the weapon is equipped. Usually, the quickest way to enhance your Weapon Proficiency is by farming open-world activities with high enemy density.
Using Weapon Proficiency Boosters
Weapon Proficiency boosters are available to increase all Weapon Proficiency gains by 30%. It is essential to note that these do not double-dip with a standard XP booster.
Benefits of Increasing Your Weapon Proficiency
There are three primary benefits of improving your Weapon Proficiency:
- Mastery Rank XP
- Higher module capacity
- The ability to install Crystallization Catalysts onto the weapon
Mastery Rank XP
Weapon Proficiency grants a small amount of Mastery Rank XP, which is required to unlock additional module slots and capacity. In addition, installing a Crystallization Catalyst at Weapon Proficiency 40 allows you to install a new module symbol onto the gun at the cost of resetting its Weapon Proficiency.
Higher Module Capacity
Increasing your Weapon Proficiency enhances the weapon's module capacity. This additional capacity originates from either the Player's Mastery Rank (MR) or the Weapon Proficiency, whichever is higher. With higher Weapon Proficiency levels, you'll start to earn one extra module capacity every 2-5 levels or so.
Crystallization Catalysts
Reach Weapon Proficiency 40, and you can install a Crystallization Catalyst, enabling you to install a module symbol of your choice into any slot, thus cutting a matching module's capacity cost in half. This is essential for fitting the strongest, most expensive modules into your builds, making it crucial for endgame min-maxing.
