New Gaming Era: Microsoft Finalizes Acquisition of Activision Blizzard King

TL;DR: After overcoming regulatory hurdles, Microsoft finalizes its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, marking a significant shift in the gaming industry. This move brings renowned franchises under Microsoft's wing, with plans to integrate these titles into Xbox Game Pass. Bobby Kotick will stay on through 2023 to ensure a smooth transition.

After an arduous journey that stretched well over a year, Microsoft has officially crossed the finish line in its monumental acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, marking a seismic shift in the gaming industry landscape.

The saga that began in early 2022 reached its climax on October 13, when Microsoft triumphantly announced the completion of its acquisition of Activision Blizzard King. This deal of historic proportions not only encapsulates renowned development studios but also globally celebrated franchises like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo.

This exhaustive process wasn't without its fair share of challenges, as Microsoft found itself in the crucible, navigating through various antitrust evaluations, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) presenting significant obstacles. However, the acquisition received the final nod of approval from the UK CMA, drawing the lengthy scrutiny to a close.

A New Dawn: Activision Blizzard Under Microsoft's Umbrella

The proclamation from Microsoft resounded across the gaming community, confirming that Activision Blizzard King's wealth of resources, including its plethora of development teams, now falls under the expansive wing of Microsoft Xbox.

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, disseminated the news via Xbox Wire, extending a warm welcome to the new teams and emphasizing the unification of gamers across various platforms: "As one team, we’ll learn, innovate, and continue to deliver on our promise to bring the joy and community of gaming to more people. We’ll do this in a culture that strives to empower everyone to do their best work, where all people are welcome, and is centered on our ongoing commitment of Gaming for Everyone. "

Integrating Worlds: Game Pass and Beyond

In terms of what this means for gamers, particularly those subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, the horizon looks promising. Microsoft disclosed its intentions to integrate beloved titles from Activision, Blizzard, and King into the Game Pass ecosystem, with further details to be revealed in the ensuing months.

This colossal merger sees over 30 game studios from the triad of Activision, Blizzard, and King divisions, alongside their 8,500-plus employees, amalgamating into the Microsoft fold.

Activision Blizzard's CEO, Bobby Kotick, will remain on board to shepherd the transition through the end of 2023, assuring his commitment to a seamless integration.

Journey's End: A New Chapter Begins

The 633-day voyage was fraught with trials, including an initial deal rejection by the UK CMA due to cloud technology concerns and a subsequent lawsuit from the US FTC. Despite these tribulations, Microsoft persevered, solidifying a deal that ushers in a transformative phase for the gaming titan.

With this acquisition, eyes are now keenly set on what the future holds, be it the unfolding of Diablo 4's Season 2 or the anticipatory ripples surrounding Call of Duty’s upcoming narrative, Modern Warfare 3.
