[Discussion] Goodbye to Nintendo eShop for Wii U and 3DS

Recommended Posts

Nintendo has announced that it will no longer be possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems as of March 27, 2023. The move is a signal of the company's continued focus on its latest console, the Nintendo Switch.

The changes to the Nintendo eShop have gradually happened over the last year, with the ability to use a credit card to add funds to an account in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems having already ceased as of May 23, 2022. Users can still redeem download codes until March 27, 2023, and those who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet with their Nintendo Account wallet can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until the same date.

The move will also mean that it is no longer possible to download free content, including game demos, and related services will cease to function. However, users will still be able to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates, and enjoy online play on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems for the foreseeable future.

Nintendo has acknowledged the loyal fans who supported the eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems over the years and has created a website where players can look back on their time with them through various play statistics.

While this news may come as a disappointment to some fans, it is important to note that the Nintendo Switch family of systems will not be affected by the changes to the eShop. Nintendo remains committed to supporting the latest console and providing new and exciting experiences for its players.

Eventually, they were going to move on from the older consoles. It's how business is done because they surely make more money from being more focused on their latest consoles. They have given it all to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family, so it's a harsh decision to put an end to it now.
