Turbulent Times at Bungie: Layoffs and Delayed Games

TL;DR: Bungie, a well-known gaming studio, has reportedly laid off a number of staff and delayed two anticipated games: "The Final Shape," an expansion for Destiny 2, and "Marathon," a new title. These changes reflect broader industry trends, as various gaming and tech companies have also reduced their workforce.

In the wake of the tumultuous conditions affecting the gaming industry, Bungie, a renowned game development studio, is reportedly facing internal changes, including the reduction of its workforce and the postponement of two highly anticipated game releases.

Staff Changes and Game Development Delays

Bungie's CEO, Pete Parsons, supposedly briefed the team on imminent news, prompting a scheduled team meeting to address the developments of the day. In tandem, sources claim that Bungie has decided to delay the launch of their upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, "The Final Shape," and their new title, "Marathon." The former, initially slated for release on February 27, 2024, is now expected to launch in June of the same year. "The Final Shape" is poised to provide a resolution to the main storyline of Destiny 2, though it does not signal the game's conclusion. "Marathon," an extraction shooter aiming to rejuvenate a classic IP from the 1990s, has had its release pushed back to 2025. This delay signifies Bungie's strategic shift as it strives to reestablish its prominence in the contemporary gaming sphere, moving beyond its association with the Destiny franchise.

    Industry-Wide Layoffs and Bungie’s Position

This development at Bungie reflects a broader trend within the gaming and tech industries, marked by numerous companies reducing their workforce. Sony, which finalized its acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion in the previous year, has witnessed staff cuts across various subsidiaries including Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, and the PlayStation Visual Arts support team. Other major players in the industry, such as Epic Games, CD Projekt Red, Niantic, Telltale, EA, and Unity, have similarly reduced their staff in 2023. This challenging period underscores the volatility and shifting dynamics of the gaming industry, as companies navigate through turbulent times.

Sad how effected the gaming industry seemed this year by layoffs not sure I’ve seen as much in this industry thus far.

Ya, this year seems to be far above the norm.  I wonder if there is an underlying cause.  Perhaps the massive amounts of money throw around buying studios during their highs via the lockdowns is now becoming an issue for budgets.

This looks real bad. I saw some videos on how much of the company was gutted and how they are even pulling  stocks and expenses from them.  Sony seems to be in charge of it.

Wonder if Sony is really regret purchasing the company at this point? As it really sounds like Bungie just sent all their top talent packing, which is something you don't do. I'm seeing a ton of people refunding all their future Destiny purchases.

Destiny 2 is falling and Marathon seems to be off to a poor start.  If nothing else, that was a lot of money for a studio that might not make much profit for 2+ years.  Oddly enough, using the fan favorite game as a cash cow and making a new game with the depth of "what is trending on Google" appears to be a poor business plan.
