  1. 1545820512_halo3.png.44ea8556881284e42b74ed1747662be0.pngFans to one of the most classic FPS games of all time, Halo 3, are in for an exciting announcement as 343 Industries is planning to add at least two more maps into the now 14-year-old game. Of course, the Master Chief Collection landing on PC has refreshed the series and brought Halo 3 back into the gaming spotlight as of late, but this is still huge news from a developer that seemed completely focused on releasing the new Halo Infinite.

The new maps are Waterfall and Edge which were leaked by beta testers and seemed to be Maps that were going to be utilized in the never released project of Halo Online.  Halo Online was supposedly going to be a free to play multiplayer only shooter based on the Halo 3 game engine but was scrapped after only a few months of only being available in Russia. We do not have many details of Halo Online, but it does seem to be a poorly aimed product with how already wildly successful Halo 3's online multiplayer had become.

With the new battle pass season system used in the Master Chief Collection it has been noted that these new maps will release as part of Season 6 which does not have a confirmed release date nor is it confirmed that the maps will launch at the beginning of the season.   Waterfall appears slightly similar two Halo 2's industrial setting utilized in the map Lockout and edge is a full runner facility that is like the forerunner designs utilized in Halo 4.

  2. BioWare, the developer for Anthem, has posted a blog update that officially announced the end of development for Anthem’s big revamp (Anthem Next) and an end to the game’s development future.  The blog post also states that there are no plans to end the live service that the gam runs on and players can expect the run “as is” for now.  Which is a positive as the game requires an online service to run.

For those unaware, Anthem was one of the most anticipated games of its time and launched in a state that could only be stated as unfinished.  After years of improvements to the game by BioWare, the game is quite good but lacks any reasonable player base for a multiplayer focused game after the terrible start to the game.

The studio makes mention of COVID-19 limiting their manpower and capabilities to a point that fixing Anthem was taking away from the new Mass Effect and Dragon Age releases while also creating problems with creating updates for more successful games, like Star Wars: The Old Republic.

This is not a surprising move as the game was all but dead after the horrible launch and inability to fix the problems for months after the release, but it is certainly sad to see for core Anthem players who supported the game from day one.

Hopefully Anthem 2 is not off the table for the studio as the game did have a solid platform and concept as a looter shooter, but the series may never be seen again with how poor the original has performed.

  4. The NZXT H1 is a premium small form-factor PC case that has been in the highlight as of late for shipping with a faulty PCIe riser cable that has exposed wiring touching the metal screw used to attach the cable to the case.  The riser was designed poorly and lacked reinforcement where the screw is inserted, which allowed the screw to break down the board material and come in direct contract with the internal wiring and create a new circuit.  This screw would then heat up and cause a fire.

NZXT stated this was an extremely low probability issue and shipped out nylon screws to customers to replace the included metal ones.  The nylon screws are non-conductive and therefore could directly touch the internal wiring without risk of fire.  However, the company made an oversight as customers could very easily switch the screws out with metal ones and there were no warnings on the product to remind customers not to change the screw type years later.

The product has been officially recalled by NZXT as a fire hazard and the official company letter states that they will be pulling the product off their company store until new risers are available and will be sending replacement risers to current customers.  The letter states that customers may return the case if they purchased it from their official store, but states that customers must work with the retailer to return the case if purchased somewhere else.  The letter also lists how to get a repair packet for current owners.

The CPSC has issued an official recall notice as well for the product and stated that around 32,000 units were sold.

  5. NVIDIA announced the RTX 3060 GPU quite awhile ago but we now have a MSRP and a release date.  The card is going to drop on February 25th (one week from today) and will be suggested to be listed at $329.  This card is designed to be a “budget” card in the 3000 series along side the more expensive, and more powerful, 3070, 3080, and 3090 cards.  If you did not know, NVIDIA GPUs currently uses the first two numbers (30) for the series and the last two numbers (60) as essentially a performance mark with the higher number being more powerful.  Also the Ti versions are more capable than the non-Ti versions although are also more expense and the RTX 3060 Ti is already released for $399+ if you can find one.

While this is great news for gamers who are looking for an exceptionally good budget card, it is not all good news as the GPU shortage has already shown its head for these new cards.  Many stores offering preorders have already raised the prices over 50% of the MSRP and multiple sites have already reported that miners and scalpers are eyeing up the new cards.

Overall, we are excited to hear about the new cards and truly hope they find themselves in the hands of gamers.  However, it seems like these cards are already destined to fall into the GPU nonsense pit and be a hard to find in the overpriced GPU nightmare like the rest of the 3000 series.  We would recommend preordering a card if you can in order to avoid the nightmare restocking process that is likely to follow.

  8. The 4 year old Halo based RTS game has officially come to an end per a blog post by 343.  The post did not mention shutting down the servers or anything along those lines, but 343 will no longer release patches or preform changes to the game.  This also means that there will no longer be any additional content for the game and a port to Steam is essentially dead.  Although they did mention that the team would ensure the game continues to work "as is".

It is a sad day for the fairly large player base still playing multiplayer but 343 has done an excellent job in my eyes at supporting the game this long after it never really preformed well.  Halo Wars 3 was not addressed in any manner but it is safe to say that it is not in 343's immediate road map for the Halo Series.

The post makes it sound like all the staff helping with Halo Wars 2 had been moved to Halo Infinite and/or other projects in the company.  Check out the video by TeamRespawn who have been dedicated to the game since day one and continue to be going forward.

  9. After 2020’s E3 event was cancelled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the Entertainment Software Association has confirmed that E3 2021 is planned to happen as a digital event.  The event coordinators promised a “reimagined” virtual event for 2021 after a failed attempt at creating a virtual 2020 E3 Expo and it is now confirmed that the event will be happening via multiple news sources (although there has yet to be an official announcement).

Leaked documents sent to game publishers have the event three-day event scheduled to be live streamed June 15-17.  These dates are the previously scheduled dates of E3’s planned “Summer of Gaming” event that it was planning to put together earlier as a sort-of digital replacement for E3 during the pandemic.  We are unsure what will become of Summer of Gaming or if it and E3 will simply be one event.

The Entertainment Software Association seems to have the intention of working with publishers to push out demos and previews of games to gamers before and during the event to coordinate with the event.  The association also seems to have their eyes set on incorporating cloud gaming-based demos to work as the limited in-house demos that expo normally has.

There are some problems with these confirmations however, as Entertainment Software Association has not published that the expo has been voted on by its membership board.  This board consists of many of the industries largest publishers who have seen success in creating their own digital gaming focused events without E3 last year.  There is currently no information on who is interested in an E3 Expo in 2021 and the expo has certainly already been facing challenges with many large publishers (EA and Sony to name a few) already leaving the event before 2020’s virus pandemic even began.

Along with those problems, the ESA has yet to cancel a physical event even officially for 2021, making some worried that the event is not as focused or prepared as it may seem.  However, for now we have a lot to look forward to and can only hope that game publishers realize that a unified and independent event is great for the industry alongside the numerous independent events that many gamers struggle to keep up with.

  11. During today's earnings call, EA briefly released some minor Battlefield 6 information to its investors. Sadly, we did not learn very much about the details of the game but EA did confirm that they are still planning to do a proper announcement of the game this spring and is still planning for a full release of the game this holiday season.

EA also made no mention on what platforms the game will be available for so we do not know if it will be available for PlayStation 4 or the original Xbox One S/X. There was a strong push towards massive battles which could simply be marketing for the investors or it could be a sign that they will be focusing on larger game modes which did have success in the more recent Battlefield games and I personally quite enjoyed them as a break from the standard small team format every other shooter utilizes.

At the end, EA closed up the announcement with a statement that seemed very promising for the franchise and stated that the series was going to “return to full-out military warfare”. As of right now we will just have to wait and see in the spring for more details Battlefield 6 and how EA plans to drop the game in a very FPS heavy 2021 holiday season.

  12. Ever since breaking ties with Microsoft, Bungie has certainly not been a front liner of Master Chief or the Halo series however it definitely has not been completely separated from the franchise.  Recently Microsoft has announced the Xbox 360 versions of Halo will be ending their online support and now Bungie is following up by stating that their legacy Halo website will no longer function as of February 9th.

The site itself has not been updated for the past nine years however has remained online as a memorial to the thousands of community statistics and Creations taken from the start of Halo 2 to the end of Halo Reach.  Bungie is encouraging gamers to save their statistics and files however they can and wanted to remind gamers that news articles, forum topics, and groups were already imported to the newer version of bungie.net back in 2013.

If you are somehow not in the loop after the release of Halo Reach Bungie transferred ownership of the Halo franchise to 343 Industries who are currently the production of Halo Infinite and the creators of all the Halo games in between (minus some side series by third-party developers).

If you were an old Halo player it is probably worthwhile to check out what is on your profile as this also includes archived screenshots from the old games. If nothing else it is a great time to bring back memories of the old Halo days.

  13. The past days have been full of rumors about Ubisoft+ coming to Xbox Game Pass and there is some weight behind these rumors.  The "leak" that is fueling these rumors seems to be a simple posting from Xbox that list "Microsoft obtaining publishing rights to an unannounced AAA surprise" which could be essentially anything from a single game to a full studio partnership, or a second EA Play style integration.

When did this leak turn into an Ubisoft+ deal?  Well, that seems to be the problem as sources just starting sending Tweets and articles about it without any reliable source to backup the claim.  There is also the problem of Ubisoft+ only offering one tier and it is unlikely that we will see a major publisher drop all their AAA games on Game Pass day one.

However, Ubisoft does work with Game Pass often and stranger things have happened in the gaming world.  Perhaps even if this rumor is false, the excitement and momentum that it is creating will fuel an actual deal with the two companies.  It is far too early to see how EA Play on Game Pass has benefited EA, but it is fairly safe to assume that it did not hurt the company and that may be all Ubisoft needs to jump in.

  14. The online servers for Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Spartan Assault and Halo Wars will be turned off next year and digital sales of those games will end this month.  The games will still work for local play, but all online services will be turned off no sooner than December of 2021.

343 has provided a chart of features for these games after the shutdown happens with matchmaking and file share ending for all the FPS games, but all local content (including custom games) will remain working.  Achievements are listed as "varies" for every game and details are limited on what that means, but it does not seem promising as they later encourage players to grab all their missing achievements before the shutdown.

This shutdown will also include playing the games via backwards compatibility modes but not via Xbox One versions or MCC as those versions are running on a more modern system.  However, even trying to hop onto an Xbox 360 version on Halo via your Xbox One will result in the same shutdown of online services.

Halo DLC will be available for free until the shutdown but the games themselves will no longer be listed at this point via the Xbox Store.  There is supposed to be a notation in the announcement on the free DLC, but it does not appear to be listed anywhere, so your experience may vary.  The 343 team has encouraged players to push for those last few achievements and to enjoy their custom file share content as much as they can, as even the legacy file share will be shut down after this move.

It has been a great run full of solid memories for the series on 360 but all good things must come to an end.  Thankfully, local content will still be working, and all the games are included in the Master Chief Collection (besides Spartan Assault and Halo Wars) or otherwise available on newer platforms or PC.  Oddly, Halo 2 is missing from this entire announcement although it does not appear to be listed in the store anymore either.

  15. Ever since 343 announced that Halo Infinite would have a free to play multiplayer, the gaming community has both praised the move while also fearing the microtransactions that will come with it.  Luckily, a recent interview with Halo Infinite lead progression designer Christopher Blohm has clarified the microtransaction plans for the game and it is encouraging.

Blohm has confirmed that loot boxes will not be part of the game and all microtransactions will be “one and done” style purchases.  He also stated that microtransactions will only be cosmetic items available for purchase and will not directly affect gameplay in any way beyond visuals.  Along with those clarifications, we also learned that the game will be focusing on unlockable cosmetic items though the in-game progression system and achievements which is a huge plus for Halo fans who loved pushing though challenges to gain armor in the past.

While we do not know how much of the cosmetics will be locked behind achievements vs paywalls, we do enjoy hearing that the team seems to be focusing on a player friendly microtransaction system.  There is certainly plenty of time for things to change before the game is released and surely more information will come out about the system in the coming months but for now we have reason to be excited.  Also do not forget to check out the full Halo Waypoint update to also see some nice in game screenshots of the upcoming title.

  16. Details are limited and no reasons were given about why the delay has occurred beyond "we need more time to provide the Xbox Game Pass experience" posted in an Official Xbox Update, but the inclusion of EA Play on PC for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers is officially delayed until sometime in 2021.

This update is fairly concerning as it landed exactly on the day that the partnership should have launched and the update leans heavily towards only an update arriving in 2021 and no mention on the partnership itself coming.  We can hope that it is due to integration issues and Microsoft needing to direct their focus to the troublesome Xbox Series S/X launch, but there is nothing more than speculation and a highly uninformative update at this time.

The good side to this is a Tweet by @XboxGamePassPC mentions that the delay is due to the team wanting to provide a higher quality experience and made it sound as if the aforementioned integration issues may be the delay.

  17. After a few hyped up rumors, Epic Games has confirmed that not only is Master Chief coming to Fortnite, but an entire suite of Halo themed items are expected to coming.  The release at the Game Awards showed Chief's armor skin and confirmed a cross-over is coming.  Recent leaks have also shown a Warthog vehicle skin, a Pelican glider skin, and what appears to be some map graphics all coming for Season Five.

Season Five is the followup of the current Marvel Cross over and will include Halo, God of War, and Star Wars in a phenomenon that has started a search for warriors from other dimensions.  We do not have a full list of cross-overs that will end up being a part of the lineup, but it is very exciting so far!

Although with both Xbox, PlayStation, and Disney dropping their biggest characters into the game, we can not help but look at Nintendo for the glimmer of Mario hope (Although Samus would probably be the best fitting).

Check out the release trailer below!

  18. Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Warzone's Season One update has been delayed by one week.  The original release date was announced for December 10th but will now be December 16th.

"It's an unprecedented amount of free content and the teams are currently prepping for the biggest Season One launch week ever seen," Activision said in a blog post.  Season One starts a massive integration between player progression and battle pass rewards on Cold War and Warzone.

Warzone will be gaining a pile of Cold War weapons and blueprints and Cold War will be gaining new maps, playlists, and fireteam maps.  The classic Raid map seems to have already been leaked via coding, but we do not have a confirmation of this.  Seasonal prestige is getting a new system that will add 1000 ranks that link together Modern Warfare, Cold War, and Warzone.  Media outlets seem to be reporting that the current seasonal system is a grind in Cold War, and it appears they will be continuing the grind, but adding in some more double XP weekends to help players.

Activision has also stated that the update will bring numerous quality-of-life improvements to the games, but no details have been leaked on what this means.  It also appears that the new Warzone map, rumored to be Rebirth Island, will be landing with the Season One update as well.

Overall, this update seems both massive and exciting to us as players.  We hope these large seasonal updates continue longer than they did in Modern Warfare, but for now we will stay excited for what is about to come this month.

  19. Winter makeovers and Christmas themed events have certainly not been uncommon for the Call of Duty series and it appears Cold War may be getting a Winter Nuketown '84 this year.  A call of Duty player discovered a bug that showed Christmas style decorations on the map and that seems to be solid evidence that a winter theme is planned.  While this is still a bug and not a leak, we are hopeful and the player feedback seems overwhelming positive.

However, this has been added to list of visual bugs players seem to be encountering in the game and hopefully we can also get some bug patches from the developers for Christmas as well.

  20. Yamaha has launched a new AV receiver and it appears to be quite good for gamers with both the new consoles and many PC setups.

The RX-A2A supports 4K at 120Hz and includes Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM).  This means smooth game play along with reduced input lag according them Yamaha.

Quick Media Switching (QMS) is a feature they added to allow easy switching between movies and gaming and Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces latency for even smoother, no-lag gaming, and real-time interactive virtual reality.

All these features seem to be a great blend of support for a solid next gen gaming receiver.  Plus I have always been a fan of Yamaha's audio equipment.

  22. The "Mass Effect" trilogy is getting a 4k remaster in 2021 that will be coming to consoles and PC, that includes the PS4 and Xbox One.  The details are limited, but we know that it will be the first three games in the series and will be an "enhancement", not a full remaster.

The Legendary Edition will include all the single player DLC and in game armor and weapons.  As of writing this article, there are currently preorder listings of the game for $60 on Amazon and Best Buy, but information is limited and some rumors include PC players getting the upgrade for free if they own the other games.
