  4. Significant Layoffs Amidst Microsoft Cuts

Sledgehammer Games, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, has been significantly impacted by Microsoft's recent decision to lay off nearly 1,900 employees. Reports from InsiderGaming indicate that the company has lost about 30% of its workforce. This substantial reduction in staff comes as part of broader cuts affecting the Microsoft Gaming division, following the tech giant's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Office Closure and Transition to Remote Work

In addition to the layoffs, Sledgehammer Games is closing its main office, prompting a shift to remote work. The developer, known for its work on "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," will operate remotely until a new office space is located. This move to work from home decided during a company town hall meeting, is expected to last at least until the end of 2024. The closure of the main office and the significant layoffs have reportedly caused discontent among some employees, contrasting sharply with Activision's previous insistence on full-time office work for QA staff.

Broader Impact on Call of Duty Studios

The layoffs at Sledgehammer Games are part of a larger trend affecting multiple studios involved in the "Call of Duty" franchise, including Treyarch, Raven Software, and High Moon Studios. The layoffs account for about 8 to 9 percent of the total workforce at Activision Blizzard, significantly altering the landscape of these key development teams. Xbox head Phil Spencer has expressed regret over the layoffs, noting the difficulty of such decisions. Despite this, concerns have been raised about the future direction of Activision Blizzard under Microsoft's ownership, particularly regarding the outsourcing of QA roles and the potential impact on game development and employee morale.

  5. Major Reductions at Activision Blizzard and Xbox

Microsoft has recently announced a considerable reduction in its workforce, affecting around 1,900 employees within its Gaming division, which encompasses Activision Blizzard and Xbox. This decision translates to an 8% cut from the division's total staff of approximately 22,000. The move is part of a broader strategy to refocus on high-impact projects and establish a more sustainable future for the company's gaming ventures.

    Leadership Changes and Project Cancellations

In addition to the layoffs, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra has decided to leave the company, marking a significant change in the company’s leadership. Allen Adham, another key figure at Blizzard, is also departing. Furthermore, Microsoft has decided to cancel the development of Blizzard's survival game, a project that had been in the works, as part of its strategic realignment.

    Internal Communications and Future Directions

An internal memo, discovered by The Verge, from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer highlights the necessity of these changes, stressing the need for a sustainable cost structure. The company plans to focus on growth areas and align its resources towards promising opportunities. This restructuring comes amid a series of recent layoffs in the gaming industry and follows Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which was completed last year.

These layoffs represent a significant shift in Microsoft's approach to its gaming business, marking a period of transition and realignment for the company's gaming endeavors.

  6. Multiplayer Considerations for Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

CD Projekt, in a report by Reuters, is in the conceptual stage of developing a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently known by its codename Orion. The company's joint CEO, Adam Badowski, mentioned that they are staffing up for this project, with expectations to have around 80 people working on it by the end of the year. Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski revealed that the team is contemplating the inclusion of a multiplayer component in Cyberpunk 2. This comes after the cancellation of the planned multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077, which was scrapped in favor of focusing on improving the core game after its challenging launch.

    Gameplay and Storyline Development Underway

While details about Cyberpunk 2 remain scarce, there are hints that the game may feature more extensive branching storylines, influenced by the player's chosen life path – a concept introduced in the first game with options like Street Kid, Corpo, and Nomad. Decisions about key gameplay aspects, such as whether the game will feature first or third-person perspectives, are still in the works. Following the final major update of the original Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red's focus has shifted entirely to the development of its sequel, indicating a commitment to evolving the Cyberpunk narrative and gameplay experience.

Expansion Plans and Learning from Past Mistakes

In addition to the developments in the Cyberpunk franchise, CD Projekt is also progressing with the next game in The Witcher series, codenamed Polaris. Badowski stated that they aim to have around 400 people working on Polaris by mid-2024, with industry analysts predicting a launch in 2026 or 2027. Addressing the use of AI in game development, Nowakowski acknowledged its potential to enhance certain production processes without replacing human creativity and expertise. Reflecting on the lessons learned from the tumultuous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, Badowski assured that improved production processes are now in place, aiming to avoid similar issues in future game releases. This commitment suggests a more refined approach to game development at CD Projekt, focusing on quality and player experience.

  8. Strengthening Rules Against Harassment and Discrimination

Activision Blizzard has taken a significant step towards fostering a more respectful gaming environment in Call of Duty by updating its code of conduct. The revision specifically strengthens the "Treat Everyone with Respect" pillar, underscoring the company's zero-tolerance policy towards bullying, harassment, and derogatory comments. This includes discrimination based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, culture, faith, and other personal attributes. The update aims to reflect the company's commitment to preventing its games from being used as platforms for promoting discrimination or violence.

    Cheating Rules and Account Responsibility

Alongside addressing harassment, Activision Blizzard has also updated its rules regarding cheating. The company reiterated that players are responsible for all activities on their accounts. The use of cheats, including any third-party software, contradicts the values outlined on the company's website and is deemed unacceptable. These measures are part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity of the gaming experience in Call of Duty and ensure fair play among its community.

Voice Moderation System and Encouraging Reports

Activision Blizzard reported the initial findings from its new voice moderation system, which has been in beta since August 2023. Since its introduction, over two million accounts have been automatically reported for disruptive behavior, leading to an 8% decrease in repeat offenders. Despite this progress, only one in five instances of disruptive behavior is being reported by players. As a result, the company is seeking ways to encourage more active reporting from its users, including soliciting feedback to improve the reporting process. The voice moderation system is part of a larger initiative to combat toxicity in the game, with ongoing efforts to deploy new features and technologies to address toxic and malicious in-game activities. This stance is firm: toxic behavior has no place in Call of Duty, reflecting a changing culture in online gaming where respect and fair play are paramount.

Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) has become a hot topic in the gaming community, especially concerning popular titles like Battlefield 2042. This guide explores the concept of SBMM, its rumored implementation in Battlefield 2042, and the broader implications for players.

    Understanding SBMM

SBMM is a matchmaking system designed to pair players with similar skill levels. Its primary goal is to create balanced and competitive matches. While widely used, SBMM has sparked controversy among gamers, with many criticizing its impact on game enjoyment.

    Common Implementations of SBMM:

    • Evenly Matched Lobbies: Players of similar skill levels are grouped together.
    • Mixed Skill Lobbies: Teams are balanced by distributing players of varying skills evenly.

    Battlefield 2042 and SBMM

According to Battlefield insider Tom Henderson, Battlefield 2042 features SBMM, but its implementation differs from games like Call of Duty and Fortnite.

    Key Points:

    • Server-Based SBMM: In Battlefield 2042, SBMM reportedly occurs after players join a server, unlike pre-matchmaking in games like COD.
    • Historical Context: This approach is consistent with previous Battlefield games, suggesting no significant change in matchmaking strategy.
    • Unofficial Information: It's important to note that these details are not officially confirmed by EA or DICE.

    Implications for Players

The rumored SBMM system in Battlefield 2042 has several potential implications:

    • Game Balance: Server-based SBMM might lead to more balanced teams, enhancing overall gameplay experience.
    • Player Experience: Differing from the traditional SBMM approach could affect how new and veteran players experience the game.
    • Competitive Integrity: This system might maintain a fair competitive environment without excessively penalizing skilled players.

    Conclusion

While SBMM in Battlefield 2042 remains a subject of speculation, understanding its potential forms and implications is crucial for players. As EA and DICE have not officially commented on SBMM's presence or functionality in the game, it's essential to approach this information cautiously. Keeping abreast of official announcements and updates from EA and DICE will be vital for players seeking clarity on the matchmaking system in Battlefield 2042.

  13. Introduction

The concept of Engagement Optimized Matchmaking (EOMM) has garnered attention in the gaming community, particularly following a patent filed by Electronic Arts (EA). This guide aims to provide an overview of EOMM, its potential implications in games like Battlefield 2042, and address the surrounding discussions and concerns.

    What is EOMM?

Engagement Optimized Matchmaking is an algorithmic approach that tailors online gaming experiences based on individual player behavior and preferences. It's designed to track various player metrics such as skill level, play style, and frustration thresholds. The primary goal of EOMM is to enhance player engagement by dynamically adjusting matchmaking.

    Key Features

    • Behavior Tracking: Monitors player performance, aggressiveness, and frustration levels.
    • Dynamic Matchmaking: Adjusts opponents based on the player's current state, potentially pairing them with easier or similarly aggressive opponents.
    • Enhanced Player Engagement: Aims to keep players engaged by optimizing their matchmaking experience.

    EOMM's Implications and Controversies

EA's patent of EOMM has raised concerns, particularly in how it could potentially influence player behavior and spending within games.

    Potential Uses

    • Improving Player Experience: By matching players with suitable opponents, it could enhance the overall gaming experience.
    • Encouraging Spending: The algorithm could be used to influence in-game spending by making games more challenging or frustrating, tempting players to purchase microtransactions.

    Community Concerns

    • Fairness and Transparency: There's apprehension about how transparent EA will be regarding the use of EOMM in their games.
    • Influence on Game Dynamics: Players worry that EOMM could prioritize revenue generation over fair and enjoyable gameplay.

    Battlefield 2042 and EOMM

While EA has not officially stated the inclusion of EOMM in Battlefield 2042, speculation exists due to the game's matchmaking issues. It's important to note that:

    • Patent Status: As of now, the EOMM system is still in the patent application process. Many patents also go unused and simply protect R&D time.
    • EA's Stance: EA has not confirmed the implementation of EOMM in any of their games, including Battlefield 2042.
    • Community Perception: The player community largely believes that EOMM is not currently part of EA's games.

    Conclusion

The concept of Engagement Optimized Matchmaking represents a significant development in online gaming experiences. While it has the potential to improve player engagement, it also raises ethical questions about player manipulation and transparency. As it stands, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that EA has implemented EOMM in Battlefield 2042 or any other game. However, the gaming community remains vigilant and concerned about how such systems could impact the future of online gaming.

  14. Refocusing Efforts: Riot Games Lays Off 530 Employees

Riot Games, the studio behind the popular game League of Legends, has initiated significant layoffs, affecting roughly 530 employees, which is about 11% of its total workforce. The company stated this decision is part of its strategy to focus on fewer, high-impact projects and move towards a more sustainable future. Riot CEO Dylan Jadeja explained that the expansion into a multi-game, multi-experience company since 2019 has led to an overwhelming number of projects, some of which have not yielded the expected results. Despite attempts at hiring freezes and other cost-saving measures, these layoffs have become essential to maintaining the core business of Riot Games.

    Internal Changes and Project Downsizing

In addition to the layoffs, Riot Games is implementing significant internal changes. The development team for 'Legends of Runeterra,' a card game based on League of Legends, will be downsized due to the game not meeting expectations. The focus will shift towards developing the Path of Champions PvE mode. Furthermore, Riot is discontinuing Riot Forge, a program launched in 2019 to create single-player League of Legends games in collaboration with external studios. This decision will affect upcoming releases like the crafting RPG Bandle Tale, which was being developed under Riot Forge.

New Strategy and Support for Laid-off Employees

Riot Games has articulated a new strategy to more tightly integrate esports, music, and entertainment with its games. The company has also disclosed the severance package for the laid-off employees, which includes a minimum of six months of severance pay, a 2023 performance bonus, health benefits, additional pay for expenses, access to job placement services for six months, visa support, and other considerations. This package is substantial compared to industry norms and is similar to the one offered by Google to its laid-off employees last year. These layoffs at Riot Games add to the growing number of job losses in the gaming industry, following recent layoffs at Behaviour Interactive, Bungie, and the potential closure of developer Piranha Bytes.

  15. New Character Customization Options in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is introducing a long-awaited feature that will allow players to customize their character's appearance without the need to delete and recreate them. This update, expected before The Final Shape expansion's release on June 4, 2024, is a response to a persistent request from the Destiny 2 community. Players will be able to modify body type, face markings, face type, and hairstyles directly from the character selection menu. This enhancement will provide a much-needed flexibility in personalizing characters, adding a new dimension to the gaming experience.

Glimmer Cap Increase: A Much-Needed Currency Update

Another significant update coming to Destiny 2 is the increase in the Glimmer cap, the primary in-game currency. This update, part of the 7.3.4 patch set for January 30, will raise the cap from 250,000 to 500,000 Glimmer. This change addresses player concerns about the cap limit, especially in light of the upcoming retirement of Legendary Shards. The increase will allow players to stockpile more Glimmer, thereby reducing the frequency of farming runs and enhancing the overall game economy.

Quality-of-Life Improvements Ahead of The Final Shape Expansion

These updates signify Bungie's commitment to improving the quality of life for Destiny 2 players. The character customization option resolves a longstanding issue, giving players the freedom to change their characters’ appearances at will. The Glimmer cap increase aligns with the game's evolving economy, making currency management more user-friendly. As Destiny 2 prepares for The Final Shape expansion, these updates are expected to significantly enhance the player experience, responding to community feedback and evolving the game’s overall appeal.

Scheduled for release on 8th February, this sequel to the original cooperative shooter game promises an enhanced gaming experience with an over-the-shoulder camera perspective and a presumably larger budget. 18. Introduction to Ranked Play in Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to elevate the competitive gaming experience with the launch of Ranked Play. Although the launch is slightly delayed following the Season 1 Reloaded update, the anticipation among players remains high. For access to Ranked Play, players must first reach level 55 in Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer mode. This competitive mode will adhere to the Call of Duty League (CDL) rules and restrictions, offering a challenging and structured environment for players.

    Maps, Modes, and Weapon Restrictions

Ranked Play will feature several specific maps and modes from the CDL. These include Search and Destroy on maps like Highrise, Invasion, Karachi, Skidrow, and Terminal, Control on Highrise, Invasion, and Karachi, and Hardpoint on Invasion, Karachi, Skidrow, Sub Base, and Terminal. The game imposes specific weapon restrictions for Ranked Play to ensure a balanced and competitive environment. Restricted weapons include all battle rifles, shotguns, marksman rifles, LMGs, and certain assault rifles, sniper rifles, launchers, and melee weapons. Additionally, all weapons from MW2 are barred from use in Modern Warfare 3's Ranked Play.

Similarly, all attachments from MW2 are excluded. The equipment restrictions cover a wide range of lethal and tactical items, such as proximity mines, C4, claymores, thermobaric grenades, flash grenades, and others. Field upgrades like tactical cameras, DDOS, and deployable covers are also restricted. The game also imposes limitations on killstreaks, including UAVs, SAM Turrets, Precision Airstrikes, Advanced UAVs, and more, to maintain the integrity of competitive play.

The introduction of Ranked Play in Modern Warfare 3 marks a significant step for players seeking a more structured and challenging competitive experience. 20. Transition to PC: A New Platform for CoD Mobile

Call of Duty Mobile, Activision's highly successful mobile version, is rumored to be making its way to PC, marking a significant expansion for the free-to-play game. Leaks and speculation suggest that the PC version of CoD Mobile is currently in testing phases in China. This move is in response to player requests for an official PC version that offers a console-like gaming experience. Unlike the emulator versions used currently, the official PC release aims to provide a full-fledged gaming experience, catering to the desires of high-end device users.

Leaked Specifications for the PC Version

The specifics regarding the PC requirements for CoD Mobile have been leaked by 'Leakers On Duty'. According to these leaks, the minimum requirements for running the game on PC would include an Intel Core i5 4590 CPU, 8GB of memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti, and Windows 7. These specifications suggest that the game will be accessible to a broad range of PC users, without necessitating major hardware upgrades. The PC version is reportedly optimized to require less setup compared to the existing CoD Mobile emulator versions.

    Enhanced Graphics and Connectivity Features

The transition of CoD Mobile to PC is expected to bring notable improvements in graphics. Leaked information indicates that the PC version will closely match the highest graphical quality available on the mobile version, potentially featuring 120 FPS, along with improved Anti-Aliasing and Lighting for compatible devices. Additionally, there's speculation about account connectivity, suggesting that players will be able to use their existing CoD Mobile accounts on the PC version. This implies a seamless integration between the mobile and PC versions, allowing players to switch platforms without losing progress.

As for cross-platform play, leaks hint at the possibility of mobile players being able to join PC friends in games. However, this would result in them being matched against other PC players, indicating separate lobbies for PC users, distinct from mobile lobbies.

While all this information about CoD Mobile's PC version is based on leaks and is subject to change, it presents an exciting outlook for the future of the game. Players and fans of the franchise should, however, take these details with caution until official announcements are made.

The cancellation of this Halo battle royale project Tatanka isn't a good precedent yet again by 343 Industries. It's now more like they are never sure about what they really want to do. For a game project to be in works for 2 years with so many fans waiting in anticipation for it but it's been thrown out is really really bad.

I can't help but feel like 343 has lost its way (well, really never had its way) with Halo and instead of just pushing to make the best Halo game, they keep pushing to make the "current best thing", but with a Halo skin.

I was actually really looking forward to this sucks to hear about it being canceled.

Been really impressed with creators are making on forge. The maps and game modes are fun and unique

If they had a Battle Royale and it had access to the Forge, that would have been an awesome combination.  It would have surely become a dream game for streamers and content creators.
