  1. From The Verge: Image: The Verge Amazon Luna, the cloud gaming service, is expanding to Canada, Germany, and the UK. I certainly didn’t have that on my bingo card. Remember: Google Stadia is dead as a doornail, and Amazon Luna, the company’s rival cloud gaming service, wasn’t doing much better. It lost a lot of games, and that was after the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority estimated it had less than 5 percent of the cloud gaming market. Oh, also, Amazon’s in the middle of layoffs so brutal that even iconic camera review site DPReview is about to shut its doors. But this? This feels like a sign that the company’s planning to take advantage of the gap left by Stadia instead of throwing in the towel. Image: UK Competition and Markets Authority Luna’s market share, like Stadia, was estimated at 0 to 5 percent. We were very unimpressed by Amazon Luna’s performance at launch, and rival Nvidia GeForce Now has made leaps and bounds since, but it’s been years since we gave Luna a good try. We’re probably overdue. Know that Luna’s business model is very different from Stadia or GeForce Now; you have to pay for subscriptions to one or more “channels,” almost like cable TV, where each offers its own Netflix-like all-you-can-eat access to a specific catalog of games. You can pay $17.99 USD a month for Ubisoft Plus, which includes most of Ubisoft’s major PC titles, $4.99 USD a month to get the Jackbox Games collection of party games, or $9.99 USD a month for the Luna Plus subscription that offers a variety from other publishers. Luna Plus has a 7-day free trial. Unfortunately, the overall list of games is still pretty small. So small, in fact, that I can comfortably share screenshots of Luna’s entire UK offering — every game — in the screenshots below. Image: Amazon Luna+ has just over 100 games. 2. From Dot Esports: A new background update to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 should have an impact on matchmaking for solo players in Ranked Play, Treyarch announced today. Mounting player complaints about solo players matching up against full teams of four forced the developer’s hand in pushing the update, which has already been deployed into MW2’s competitive mode. Just yesterday, Treyarch associate director Lawrence Metten said on Twitter that the team was “actively evaluating some changes we hope will make solo play competitively viable in all Skill Divisions.” It’s unclear if this change is what the dev had in mind, or if more is on the way. “We will continue to monitor solo, and party Ranked Play performance and make adjustments to ensure that both solo and party play are competitively viable,” Treyarch said. Recently, players such as Beans from the Call of Duty League’s Boston Breach spoke out about the solo experience in Ranked Play, agreeing that a duo queue maximum or less SR for four-stacks should be the “absolute bare minimum” for a ranked system. Related: The best CDL pro loadouts to use in Modern Warfare 2 ranked play With several rewards, skill divisions, and ranks to grind through, MW2’s Ranked Play mode has generally been a positive for players looking to take their CoD multiplayer gameplay to the next level. But it’s still a work in progress, with more changes and tweaks likely to come throughout the year. The first season of MW2’s Ranked Play mode should be coming to an end around the middle of April when season three of the game begins. Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports

  10. Overwatch 2’s monetization has been a point of contention since the game’s shift to free-to-play has made cosmetics that were once free through the original game’s loot boxes fairly expensive. It turns out one of the in-game items is also for sale in Blizzard’s online store and costs more in Overwatch 2 than it does in real life. As VG24/7 and users on Reddit have pointed out, Overwatch 2 has a cosmetic weapon charm featuring Pachimari, an in-universe mascot character, that costs 700 coins in the game’s currency, which roughly equates to $7 USD. Meanwhile, a real keychain with the same design costs $5 on Blizzard’s Gear Store. Notably, the 700 coins you would need to buy the Pachimari charm in Overwatch 2 are difficult to come by without paying for one of the preset currency bundles, and the cheapest one that would get you 700 coins is the $10 transaction that gives you 1000 coins. As of right now, Overwatch 2 doesn’t have any option to pay for the specific number of coins you’d like, so if you don’t already have the 700 coins through earning them through challenges (you can only earn 60 a week through this method, so even if you completed all these challenges since the October 4 launch, you wouldn't have that many coins yet), you’ll have to pay extra to get the charm. Overwatch 2’s shift to free-to-play did away with loot boxes, which were free and unlockable through standard play, and made it much easier to gain in-game currency by converting duplicate cosmetics into money that could be spent on skins, emotes, and other unlockable content. The change has put the game under scrutiny for its monetization practices, as items that were once attainable for free are now pretty expensive or require a significant grind to unlock while only being available for a limited time during weekly shop rotations and events like the ongoing Halloween Terror event. Despite criticism surrounding its monetization and some significant troubles with DDoS attacks and certain characters, Overwatch 2 has amassed a pretty high player base in its first month, with its daily player peak outpacing the original game’s launch. 12. Call of Duty fans are wondering if Warzone 2 will be free-to-play like its predecessor, or whether players will have to make a purchase to access the battle royale. Warzone players are excited at the prospect of Warzone 2, a spiritual successor to the Call of Duty battle royale that is set to release soon after the much anticipated Modern Warfare 2. We know a great deal about Warzone 2 from its new Al Mazrah map to details about the juicy DMZ mode that will tie into the game. From new circle mechanics to the rumored Resurgence map being lined up for 2023, there’s a ton of new stuff to look forward to in Warzone 2. With that being said, some are also wondering if it will follow a similar format to Warzone and be free-to-play. Will Warzone 2 be free-to-play? Activision did confirm that Warzone 2.0 will once again be free-to-play for all players and will require no money to actually play the game. Just like the original, Warzone 2 is a live service game with an optional paid premium battle pass system in which players receive rewards throughout the season. There are the usual options for players to spend their money on cosmetics and, just like Warzone, players will not be forced to purchase anything. Players will likely be able to enjoy Warzone 2 completely free of charge, and can still redeem rewards through free tiers of the Battle Pass. Will Warzone 2 require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live? Warzone 2 is available to play on console without a PS Plus and Xbox Live membership. Simply meaning that all players, regardless of online membership, will be able to play and enjoy Warzone 2 online at no expense. This makes sense considering those on PC will not have to purchase a membership to play, making it fair for all platforms. Activision are happy to be inclusive and understandably want as many players playing Warzone 2 as possible. If you are someone who’s interested in Warzone 2, then have a look at the next rumored Warzone 2 main map, as well as all the latest on Modern Warfare 2 Season 1. 13. A Modern Warfare 2 exploit is giving players unlimited Tactical Sprint after players discovered the buff in movement from the get-go. Modern Warfare 2 has finally arrived, giving players the opportunity to discover the new maps, modes, and weapons in the game. Despite Infinity Ward suggesting not to do so, many players changed their console region settings to access Modern Warfare 2 earlier than anticipated. Players have already started the grind through the ranks and have been enjoying multiplayer matches. With so many new features to explore, day one has a ton of surprises to uncover. One of these unexpected surprises seems to be a movement exploit that allows for unlimited Tactical Sprint. Movement has been a controversial topic leading up to Modern Warfare 2, with fans split over the slide cancel maneuver. Tactical Sprint is another hot topic of discussion as it allows players to zoom across the map at a blistering pace. Players quickly discovered that performing a melee movement extends the Tactical Sprint duration. If the melee comes in at the end of the Tactical Sprint, players will immediately be able to Tactical Sprint again. Usually, a cool down comes into play, which blocks players from constantly spamming Tactical Sprint. As users in the comments of the Reddit post put it: “This is definitely an exploit that will get patched.” There’s no doubt that the devs will look to patch this exploit. However, it remains to be seen how quickly they will address it, given the multitude of issues that may arise as players flock to the game. Players took the opportunity to claim that “Tac Sprinting was one of the worst things to ever happen to cod.” Even without the exploit in the picture, it seems some players view the Tactical Sprint as an unwanted feature. 14. The long-term future of Call of Duty, and more specifically what platforms it will be kept on following the conclusion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, has been a hot topic over the past couple of months. Both the heads of Xbox and PlayStation have been going back and forth with each other over the plans to keep the series on multiple platforms, with Xbox head Phil Spencer committing publicly and privately to keeping CoD on PlayStation, and PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan calling those guarantees “inadequate on many levels.” View the full article
  15. Six Invitational returns to Montreal and welcomes back a live crowd for 2023 https://ift.tt/c2J8GIe The Six Invitational, the prestigious yearly world championship for Rainbow Six Siege esports, is returning to its home in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for the first time since 2020 for SI 2023. Additionally, SI 2023 will welcome in a live crowd for the final three days of the event, from Feb. 17 to 19, inside the familiar Place Bell. This will be the first live crowd for SI since the same 2020 event in Montreal. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which began shutting down LAN and offline competition in esports starting just a couple of months after the conclusion of SI 2020, Ubisoft was unable to host the yearly event in Montreal due to Canada’s restrictions. Montreal, which serves as Ubisoft’s North American home, had previously hosted the event from 2017 to 2020. SI 2021 was hosted in the month of May for the first time in Paris, France, and featured no audience at all. Even though many of the Brazilian teams nearly were unable to attend that year due to France’s travel restrictions, two squads from Brazil ended up in the grand finals with NiP coming out on top over Team Liquid. SI 2022 was held in Stockholm, Sweden this past February, with TSM claiming a stunning victory to give NA its second SI trophy in three years. Qualification for SI 2023 is primarily determined through the Siege Global Standings, which awards points to teams based on their performances at regional league splits and the Majors. Eight teams have already directly qualified. DarkZero, Astralis, XSET, and Oxygen will represent North America, Wolves Esports, Rogue, and G2 will represent Europe, and w7m esports is the sole team currently representing Brazil. Multiple top teams including Team BDS, Liquid, FURIA, FaZe, Soniqs, and more will look to lock in their spots at SI 2023 at the Jönköping Major beginning Nov. 21. After the season’s end, four more teams from regional qualifiers will round out the 20-team field at SI 2023. SI 2023 will officially begin on Feb. 7 with the group stage. eSports News via Dot Esports https://dotesports.com October 26, 2022 at 03:39PMView the full article
  16. An Xbox Game Pass price increase might be on the horizon, according to Phil Spencer https://ift.tt/SKQDV7g Xbox Game Pass subscribers will likely see an increase in price for the monthly subscription, according to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, though it’ll likely remain the same through the holiday season. The Xbox Game Pass provides subscribers access to hundreds of games for a monthly price. The service is available on Xbox consoles, PC, and cloud services. The Game Pass costs $10 a month for the console or PC, or $15 a month for the ultimate subscription, which also includes an Xbox Live Gold subscription. This is a cost-effective deal for avid gamers, but the subscription will likely increase in the future. Spencer confirmed in a WSJ live session that Microsoft will have to “raise the prices on certain things,” according to Verge senior editor Tom Warren. “We’ve held price on our console, we’ve held price on games… and our subscription,” Spencer said. “I don’t think we’ll be able to do that forever. I do think at some point we’ll have to raise prices on certain things…” Spencer also confirmed the prices will be maintained through this holiday season, meaning subscribers don’t need to worry just yet. But a price increase is likely coming in the future, so prepare your wallets for the extra cost. It’s unlikely that the prices of consoles or games will increase, leaving the Game Pass as the likely culprit. Most subscribers seem receptive to the price increase since they believe the Game Pass has plenty of value for the cost. It’s also unlikely that the subscription cost will skyrocket, but a $5 to $10 price increase seems appropriate. eSports News via Dot Esports https://dotesports.com October 26, 2022 at 04:07PMView the full article

  18. From Dot Esports: Though this year’s tournaments have been held everywhere from Dallas to Toronto, the Overwatch League is returning to a more familiar venue for its fifth Grand Finals event. The 2022 finals will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 4, the Overwatch League announced today. Most longtime fans of the game or the league will recognize this as the usual home of BlizzCon, which is often held during that weekend. Due to COVID-19, BlizzCon has been held in different formats for the past few years. The event will likely be returning in 2023, but the Overwatch League will take up residence during the standard BlizzCon weekend this year. This will be the first in-person Overwatch League Grand Finals in three years. In 2020 and 2021, the event was held online, with West Region teams traveling to Hawaii for lower ping to compete with their East Region counterparts. The San Francisco Shock took home their second franchise championship in 2020 and the Shanghai Dragons earned a well-deserved trophy in 2021. According to the Overwatch League website, each region will have localized online play-ins before the remaining teams travel to Anaheim to participate in a double-elimination playoffs bracket, which begins on Oct. 31. The 2022 league champions will take home a $1 million grand prize and the iconic sparkling trophy. With a total prize pool of $2.55 million, teams will be doing their best to bring home the bacon from California. They’ll also be dealing with either a boon or a complication, depending on how each team sees the addition of a new support hero. Sean Miller, head of the Overwatch League, confirmed on Twitter over the weekend that Overwatch 2‘s newest hero, Kiriko, will be available during the playoffs. Ticket information for the Grand Finals isn’t listed on the website at time of writing, but a newsletter sent by the Overwatch League says ticket pre-sales begin on Sept. 23. 19. From Dot Esports: Ian “Crimsix” Porter has announced his retirement from professional Call of Duty. The 38-time champion opened up in a heartfelt YouTube video announcing his decision, sitting in front of a fire pit and speaking candidly in a way that the jokester rarely did during his 14-year career. VIDEO The former Halo pro-turned-CoD legend will now pivot to content creation, where he will stream on Twitch and post on YouTube beginning with Modern Warfare II and beyond, confirming he will also compete in Warzone 2 tournaments. The illustrious career for Crimsix came to an untimely end after a disappointing finish to the 2022 CDL season, as his New York Subliners lost to OpTic Texas in the second round of the elimination bracket. Crimsix retires second in all-time CoD esports earnings at over $1.3 million. Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports
  20. From Dot Esports: When OpTic and DRX, the top VALORANT teams out of North America and Korea, respectively, met in the lower bracket final of VCT Champions 2022, the two teams delivered an all-time performance across five maps. In the end, OpTic avoided the first-ever reverse sweep in a best-of-five in VCT, closing out the series on the final map. The exceptional showing between two great teams will live on not just as one of the best matches ever but also as one of the most viewed ever, eclipsing over one million concurrent viewers during the fifth map of the series on Haven, per Esports Charts. By reaching this milestone, Champions 2022 becomes just the fourth competitive VALORANT event to reach one million concurrent viewers during its runtime, joining Champions 2021, Masters Reykjavík 2021, and Masters Reykjavík 2022 in that regard. On top of that, the DRX vs. OpTic match has also made Champions 2022 the most watched VALORANT event ever, pushing it to over 54 million total hours watched, surpassing the 46 million hours watched mark from Champions 2021, and with the grand finals rematch between OpTic and LOUD still to come. For OpTic, this is their second ever one million concurrent viewer match, having reached the seven-figure mark earlier this year in the Masters Reykjavík grand final against LOUD. OpTic and Gambit are the only teams to compete in two matches with one million concurrent viewers each, but OpTic could very easily make that three tomorrow in a grand finals rematch against LOUD to determine the second-ever world champions. Masters Berlin 2021 and Masters Copenhagen 2022 are the only international events not to hit the one million mark and were viewed poorly compared to other international VCT events. However, this was due to unpopular format choices for the tournaments, and considering that several participants in both events had already qualified for Champions in those years, making the stakes lower at both those events. OpTic and LOUD will look to hit the one million mark together again on Sunday, with a 9am CT start time. Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports
  21. From Charlie INTEL: During Call of Duty Next and the Warzone 2.0 gameplay reveal, Infinity Ward revealed that the next installment of Call of Duty battle royale will feature H1Z1-like proximity chat. Call of Duty fans got their first look at both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 gameplay at the Call of Duty Next event on September 15. The event revealed various new details about the titles, including Gunsmith changes, the new Perk system, Raids, and even the new Warzone map, Al Mazrah. Warzone 2.0 doesn’t just feature a new map either, many changes are coming to the popular battle royale which make the game feel like a completely new experience. One of these new features is proximity chat, which looks to bring a more immersive and social experience to Warzone. Proximity chat is a feature that allows players to hear other online players who are using a microphone whenever they are in close proximity. The feature has been seen in many games such as H1Z1 and Escape from Tarkov, and it will also likely be available Warzone 2.0’s own extraction-style DMZ mode. The proximity chat feature definitely opens up Warzone 2.0 to some hilarious plays, chatting with the enemy team as you battle for victory. The feature will work similarly to the after-death chat in the original Warzone, where you can hear the player you have eliminated. In Warzone 2.0, the feature will always be on, unless the player chooses to turn it off in the settings. Having the option to turn it off is vital, as it may ruin a stealthy team play by alerting close-by enemies when strategizing with your team. BR Trios are at 102 players and proximity chat is insanity. just loud noises. — CharlieIntel (@charlieINTEL) September 15, 2022 Players have been wanting proximity chat in Call of Duty for some time, so it’s great to see the devs give the fans what they want. However, it seems like it needs some work though, as at the Call of Duty Next event players reported that the feature is just “insanity” and “loud noises.” We’ll have to wait and see how the feature plays out when Warzone 2.0 launches on November 16. It’s also unclear if the feature is available in Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer, as nothing was mentioned about it at the event, but the MW2 beta should reveal more. 23. From Dot Esports: As Overwatch 2 makes its way into the limelight, Overwatch 1 is set to make its final swan song on Oct. 2 as that will be the final day for players to play the game before servers are taken down. Since its first official season on June 28, 2016, Overwatch players have gone through 35 competitive seasons throughout the past five years. Throughout that time, Blizzard’s first-person shooter introduced 11 new heroes and 20 new maps for Overwatch players to enjoy throughout this time. It appears that this will all be coming to an end on Oct. 2, however, as the series readies itself for the upcoming sequel on Oct. 4. According to an article from Eurogamer, commercial lead Jon Spector revealed in an Overwatch 2 roundtable interview everything that fans needed to know about both games heading into the Oct. 4 release. The final day for Overwatch 1 will be on Oct. 2 when the game will have a “27-hour downtime” period where Blizzard will use that time to get the Overwatch 2 server “stood up and running,” according to Spector. Current Overwatch players will have the opportunity to download Overwatch 2 ahead of the official launch date on Oct. 4, where they may have the game pre-downloaded to avoid any extra wait time upon release. According to Spector, Blizzard will also “share a kind of launch checklist with players” ahead of the official release as the devs look to give the sequel a smooth opening day. Image via Blizzard EntertainmentWhile it may be a sad day for fans who had hoped to enjoy the nostalgia of the original Overwatch game and its 6-vs-6 gameplay style, the new changes in Overwatch 2 should be enough to keep players attention on the upcoming game for quite some time. Regardless, those who already had Overwatch 1 will receive an update from a “system’s perspective. There, players will see “Update the game to Overwatch 2” as an option. The same goes for new players who never played Overwatch 1.  Overwatch 2 is set to launch on Oct. 4 and will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Unlike the original, Overwatch 2 will be a free-to-play game through the use of a battle pass system. Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports

  25. From Charlie INTEL: Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer will finally be revealed at Call of Duty Next, and then PC players can play during the crossplay beta weekend. Infinity Ward have revealed the beta’s minimum and recommended specs, so here are Modern Warfare 2’s PC requirements. Modern Warfare 2 finally arrives on PC and consoles on October 28, but players can get their hands on the game early during the open beta. PlayStation players get an exclusive weekend following the Call of Duty Next event, but PC players can jump in on Thursday, September 22. With the beta fast approaching, Infinity Ward have revealed the minimum and recommended PC requirements for Modern Warfare 2’s beta. Here are the full PC specs and how they compare to Warzone and Vanguard. Modern Warfare 2 minimum PC requirements OS: Windows 10 – 54 Bit (latest update)CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600XVideo Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 470Video Memory: 3GBRAM: 16GB RAMStorage Space: 25GB Sound Card: DirectX CompatibleRecommended Graphic Drivers: NVIDIA: 516.79 or AMD: 21.9.1 Modern Warfare 2’s beta minimum PC specs aren’t a huge jump from 2019’s Modern Warfare, which would make sense as the game is still being developed for last-gen consoles. If you could run both Modern Warfare and Vanguard smoothly then your rig should also run Modern Warfare 2’s beta but you might need to turn down a few more graphics settings to reach your desired frame rate. The recommended GPUs are the same as Vanguard, but you’ll need to upgrade the CPU and jump to 16GB of RAM to match Infinity Ward‘s recommended settings for beta. With this hardware, you should be able to crank up the graphics settings while maintaining a high frame rate.
