  8. From Dot Esports: Remnant 2’s prerelease broke through to the top spot in Steam’s best-selling games list this week, taking first place from CS:GO. The much-hyped third-person shooter from Gunfire Games managed to stay ahead of Counter-Strike for several days on the eve of its big release, before falling back into second place again. Gunfire’ Soulslike title rose 68 places in its first two weeks on Steam’s top 100 list. Fans are lining up to play Remnant 2 after its official launch on July 25 too, so there’s every chance the summer’s surprise could take top spot for a second time. Steam’s chart ranks by revenue and surpassing CS:GO’s monstrously profitable microtransactions is no easy feat. Remnant 2 also managed to drop Baldur’s Gate 3 to third place on its way to the top, beating the latter’s $70 price tag. CS:GO revenue has kept it consistently up the higher end of rankings, pushing its way to the top against countless successful titles. The shooter earned a Platinum status in 2022 as one of the highest-selling products of that year and has seen a growing player base year-on-year, all despite being 11 years old. Related: How to unlock the Engineer Archetype in Remnant 2 It has been four years since the original Remnant, From the Ashes, was released. It has maintained “very positive” reviews since its arrival, and Remnant 2 is shaping up to be a similar success, at least in the early days; the title has already accrued an 80 on Metacritic, which overshadows From the Ashes’ 77 rating. Remnant 2 will land on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC within the next few days. 11. From Destructoid: Don’t let Gun*Nac go extinct The Video Game History Foundation has released a report they conducted with the Software Preservation Network that demonstrates that 87% of games are currently out of production and unavailable in the current market. They’ve termed any game not currently available as “Critically Endangered.” Be sure to check out the study’s methodology at this link. This initially struck me as odd, as my game closet is currently crammed with thousands of games from all periods of history. However, I am not a normal person. Many people do not have the desire, ability, or access to build a collection like mine. Most normal people only have access to what’s available in stores and digital marketplaces. As this report shows, that’s only 13% of gaming’s overall history. Sucks to be normal, I guess. This is becoming more and more concerning. Imagine if The Beatles’ Abbey Road never got a second run. That after cassettes supplanted vinyl records, you just couldn’t buy Abbey Road anymore. Or alternatively, imagine that Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho never released outside of theatres. This is a problem that is exclusive to the video game market. There are similar problems with other media, but nowhere near on this level. Right now, straight-up piracy is the only way for some people to play my beloved Gun*Nac or Rule of Rose. Publishers and developers understandably don’t want people going this way, but for many, that’s the only option. Asking people to just not explore a fascinating part of their hobby is just completely disrespectful, but that’s exactly what publishers are doing. Image via KonamiAdopt a game today A large part of this problem is the fact that these games are built on disparate hardware and require a lot of work to get them running on new platforms. There was generally no foresight at the inception of the industry as to how later generations would experience these games. However, there are ways around this, such as allowing libraries to build and lend collections as they do with movies and music, but there’s been a lot of pushback against this, as well. The Internet Archive recently lost a court case involving the sharing of e-books, which was a blow to their preservation efforts and may soon cause problems for them in other areas, such as the preservation of games. Publishers will often release collections, such as Konami’s important Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection. In other cases, publishers will release games piecemeal, like through Hamster’s Arcade Archives series or services like Nintendo’s Switch Online. However, as this report shows, all of those efforts add up to a drop in the bucket. Screenshot by DestructoidPickle those games Nintendo and other publishers are also unlikely to release games that they think will reduce the profitability of their currently available titles, or games that might be considered embarrassing to them. Nintendo isn’t likely going to ever re-release previous... Read More: Full Article on Destructoid
  12. From Dot Esports: For Halo Infinite fans who thought all the content season four had to offer came when it launched last week, it turns out 343 Industries had one more ace up its sleeve. Today it was revealed that the much anticipated remake of Plaza, a map from Halo 5: Guardians, will be going live in Halo Infinite tomorrow on June 27. While the existence of an upcoming Forge remake of the popular map has long been teased by 343, the developer had been playing coy with a release date up until now. The remake was created via the game’s Forge tools and washes out Plaza’s neon-soaked city streets with an icy and desolate affect. Launching as “Solitude,” the Plaza remake will be making its debut in not just social play, but ranked as well according to a tweet from HCS. In Halo 5, Plaza was one of the premiere competitive maps in rotation. It was famous for the trick jumps and geometry exploitation that were possible with Halo 5′s movement mechanics, which all contributed to a very unique map in tournament play. As the team behind Solitude also notes, Plaza was “one of the best Strongholds maps” as well. Whether this storied history as part of the HCS circuit will translate onto Solitude as well remains to be seen. Halo Infinite is, at the end of the day, a different game with a different sandbox that the Plaza remake had to adapt for. That could mean it’s less suited for competitive play, but 343 is going to be keeping a close eye on the reception it receives tomorrow—and when it gets added to the tournament circuit after the Arlington Major—to see whether it has a place in the map pool for the long term. Related: Iconic Halo mode finally getting added to Infinite in season 4 When Solitude launches on June 27, players will be able to get hands-on with it consistently thanks to the New Arena Unlimited playlist that will also be available at reset. New Arena Unlimited will feature only Forest and Solitude—season four’s two new four-vs-four maps—in rotation, playable with a range of game modes. With the first event of Halo Infinite’s fourth season also expected to begin tomorrow at the weekly reset, players have a lot to look forward to when they log in. 19. From Dot Esports: Atlanta FaZe players Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris, Austin “SlasheR” Liddicoat, and head coach James Crowder were the targets of a scary drive-by attack during Call of Duty: League Major Four in Columbus, Ohio between April 20 to 23. The trio was returning from a restaurant to their hotel on one of the nights when multiple men shouted at them and pulled what looked like airsoft guns from their car and shot at them, aBeZy told his fans during a live stream on April 25. Thankfully, nobody got hurt in the incident. “We were on the sidewalk pretty close to the hotel and these guys pulled up in a car and screamed,” aBeZy said while recalling the incident. “I turned around and it looked like they had a gun pointing out of the window, but it was an airsoft gun or a Nerf gun or something. They all shot us but thankfully we had our hoodies up so it didn’t really hurt. It just felt like something had tapped the back of my sweatshirt.” ABeZy told his viewers he was in shock and that he had never seen “shit” like that before. The Atlanta FaZe members couldn’t identify who was behind this attack—if it were random men or CDL fans pulling a prank on them—as the car sped away after firing the airsoft pellets at them. These guns are typically designed to not cause any lasting damage, unless the pellet hits the eye, for example. But luckily, aBeZy, SlasheR, and Crowder were protected by their hoodies. The CDL Major Four concluded on April 23 with Los Angeles Thieves defeating OpTic Texas by 4-2 in the grand finals. Atlanta FaZe made it all the way to the semifinals, but were defeated by the two finalists throughout the event. Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports
  20. From Dot Esports: The Apex Legends Global Series features the best teams fighting in each region, and every game counts towards getting to playoffs and the opportunity to claim one of the limited spots at the offline LAN events. However, the past split has been plagued with multiple technical issues that have affected the competitive experience for pros and viewers alike. On match day four for APAC-N, two of the six games on Storm Point featured extremely laggy Apex servers that slowed down each game to a crawl, with the issues clearly shown on the main broadcast.  Despite players and coaches informing spectators and admins about the server conditions, both games were still played to completion with no lobby remake. Many fans, pros, and coaches immediately criticized the unfair conditions, highlighting the lack of attention Respawn gives to the region, in comparison to the other ALGS international leagues. Fun123’s Han “dr1p” Sang-jun spoke out after his team finished last in game three on April 23, questioning why the ALGS didn’t restart the Apex match despite the overwhelming evidence of the laggy servers. Server issues aren’t new to Apex and have actually already affected many competitive regions in the ongoing 2023 season. NA and EMEA had lobby crashes mid-game, forcing admins to restart the Apex matches completely, nullifying the in-progress results. These problems had multiple pros calling to attention the lack of competitive integrity within the scene, as each match could decide a team’s playoff chances. On April 7, 2023, the PlayApex Twitter account announced a week’s delay for all affected regions to fix the server instabilities brought by recent patches. However, while NA and EMEA proceeded smoothly, APAC-N’s matches continued to suffer problems—a dire issue for the region considering it’s just one week until playoffs. APAC-N’s regular season runs for five weeks, with 12 games featured each match day. In comparison, NA and EMEA play over nine weeks, but only six games each day.  The current server issues compromise the entire region of APAC-N, and heavily influences the current race for regional finals, which only features the top 20 teams. The current standings after day four feature previous LAN teams, such as GHS Professional, within one circuit point of making the regional finals, making the final match day all the more important to proceed without bugs. Assiikun, coach for Riddle, spoke up about the recent server issues, and how the ALGS administrator present was unable to stop the matches. All teams were forced to play out matches in these unstable conditions, which stood in very stark contrast to NA and EMEA, which received full lobby remakes right after server crashes.  Despite the results, Respawn has acknowledged the problems and is actively working towards solutions to the problems. Samy Duc, technical director for Apex, responded t... Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports
  21. From Dot Esports: The Los Angeles Thieves dominated a red-hot OpTic Texas team, taking two Hardpoints from the hottest team in the league for a 3-1 victory, pushing them to the grand finals of the Call of Duty League’s Major 4. Coming into Sunday, OpTic held a tie for the most consecutive Hardpoint wins in the history of the CDL with 11 straight maps. On the other hand, Los Angeles have been one of the best teams in the league when it comes to the game mode, winning 37 of their 60 Hardpoints during the 2023 season.  The series kicked off with the water-heavy map, Hydro, with both teams coming out swinging on the first Hardpoint. After OpTic had an opportunity to get to the 250 points needed on P2, L.A. were able to contest enough time in the hill to stretch it to the next Hardpoint. At P3, it was an extremely chaotic scene with both teams running into the point, trying to win the trades battle. Ultimately, it was Los Angeles that managed to outlast Texas, taking a thrilling first map by a count of 250-244.  After a disappointing loss in the first map, OpTic needed to reset to bring the series back even on one of their best Search and Destroy maps, Fortress. Things started off perfect for Texas, as they found all four members of the Thieves in the first round for a flawless round one and a quick 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Green Wall, that lead would be short-lived. L.A. were well-prepared in the scouting department, countering every single strategy that OpTic had had success with in prior Fortress SnDs. They rattled off six of the next seven rounds to take a commanding 2-0 lead with the 6-2 victory.  If OpTic had any chance to turn the series around and make the grand finals from the winner’s bracket, it would start on Expo Control. It was about as great of a start as they could have hoped for, as they won the first two rounds to take the 2-0 lead, needing just one more round to push it to a map four. The Thieves did manage to take the next round, but OpTic were too strong in the fourth, with a suffocating defensive win.  After the win in Control, Texas had a chance to start a new Hardpoint win streak, with the series shifting gears to Mercado Hardpoint. But Los Angeles had other plans. The killfeed lit up red for what seemed like the entirety of the map. As great as OpTic’s sub-duo of Huke and Shotzzy have played over the last two months, they were equally as bad on map four.  The two combined for just 28 kills to 57 deaths, while L.A.’s Envoy put up 31 kills by himself. It was a struggle for Texas to win rotations or break into setups with their subs struggling so much, and the scoreboard reflected this in a 250-149 victory for the Thieves. With the victory, Los Angeles advanced to their fifth grand finals in their last nine events and will await the winner of the elimination bracket finals later today.  Despite the loss, OpTic are still just one series away from reaching the grand finals them... 22. From Dot Esports: The Atlanta FaZe are onto Sunday at the Call of Duty League’s Major Four with a narrow 3-2 win over the defending major champions Toronto Ultra. After winning the OpTic Texas major last month, Toronto’s slow start to major four saw them begin in the loser’s bracket. After taking down Boston Breach and Florida Mutineers to avoid elimination, the Ultra’s hope for a second consecutive championship hung in the balance in their April 22 series against FaZe. The series’ first map, Hotel Hardpoint, was a back-and-forth affair from the get-go, with each team taking turns holding the lead. For a split second, it appeared Toronto had set themselves up to earn a last-second victory, hopping onto the hill facing a 248-237 deficit. While they did take the hardpoint, Cellium was lurking on the back stairs, keeping the Ultra at bay. Simp and SlasheR picked up four kills in the last seconds to earn the final two seconds needed, taking the first map in thrilling 250-244 fashion. Up 1-0 in the series, Atlanta looked to take a commanding 2-0 lead heading to their best game mode Search and Destroy on Embassy. Behind a big 10-2 performance from SlasheR, FaZe took their second straight map comfortably 6-3. FaZe has been incredible in SnD so far this season, thanks in part to the veterans on the roster. They have not, however, been as dominant in respawn game modes as they have been in the past, and that issue continued to rear its ugly head in this series. In Expo Control, Toronto started off hot by grabbing two consecutive rounds to lead 2-0. Despite their newfound momentum, Ultra dropped the next two rounds, sending it to a do-or-die round five.  Fortunately for Toronto, the Ultra was awarded defense for the final round, and they did manage to avoid a reverse sweep and keep their championship hopes alive with a 3-2 win, giving Ultra their first series point. Game four saw a move to Mercado for the series’ second Hardpoint, and while the scorelines weren’t as close as Hotel, it was still a very tight map all the way until the end. Holding a 229-179 lead late in the map, Toronto just needed 21 seconds of hill time to send the series to a decisive fifth map. While FaZe had managed to cut the Ultra’s lead to just six seconds, Toronto broke into the hill with 14 seconds left to push their lead to 237-223 for the next rotation. Winning the team fights at the next hardpoint was all Toronto needed to clinch the map by a score of 250-223 and send it to El Asilo Search and Destroy in a win-or-go-home game five. Toronto jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, riding the momentum from their previous two maps. But FaZe has championship makeup and started to find its groove in easily the team’s best game mode. Up 5-3, Simp and Slasher found themselves in a two-vs-one retake scenario, with Hicksy last alive for Toronto. Hicksy did manage to find SlasheR to bring it to a one-vs-one with Simp, but Simp made the play, la... Read More: Full Article on Dot Esports
